HP MSA 20

The HP MSA 20 is an external SATA RAID enclosure with a SCSI interface that support up to 12 hard drives.

Currently installed on Allphones server.

Pre-requisites:

  1. Server has an external SCSI port
  2. Server has SCSI drivers installed and loaded
  3. Server has cciss drivers installed and loaded
  4. A MSA 20 enclosure with hard drives !!

Installation:

  1. Install hard drives into the enclosure.
  2. Connect enclosure to the external SCSI port on the server.
  3. Connect the power to the enclosure. There are TWO power supply units on the enclosure. You need to supply power to BOTH.
  4. Turn on the enclosure.
  5. Configure the RAID settings on the enclosure. (You can use the HP tool hpacucli. This means you will not need to reboot, but I don't know how to use it)
    1. Make sure the enclosure has finished powering up and performed it's own POST
    2. Reboot the server
    3. Enter the configuration menu for the Smart Array Controller
    4. Set the RAID settings (Usually RAID5)
    5. Continue with reboot
  6. The RAID should be listed as /dev/cciss/c0dX
  7. Use RAID as needed.

Since the enclosure can house up to 12 SATA hard drives, it would be wise to use LVM so that you can add more hard drives and expand the file system without destroying the existing partitions and file system.
