DIM’s Osborne Store Computer setup
Osborne store has its own server at the store. There is also one thin client, which connects to the store server. Both server and thin client can do sale. The server is connected to head office through VPN connection. The store computer has Internet but that is strictly for vpn connection, nothing else.
If the dim ever call you for polling problem , then you ssh to dim then ping Osborne. If ping is not successful then it could be either Internet is down or hub or router is unplug. That could be the reason for polling not working. If it is thin client not working then , check the connection with router or hub, something must be unplug or need to restart. Make them restart the router and computer and everything will be fine. Margaret at WA knows the drill. Ask her to call Osborne store to restart equipment.
On around 17 July 2008, DIM's Osborne store computer crashed. A tech installed fedora 4 and connected the original drive to the secondary master. Unfortunately all data was gone and the machine had to be rebuilt from data at HO.
